Would A Composite Or UPVC Solution Be Your Perfect Front Door?

Would A Composite Or UPVC Solution Be Your Perfect Front Door?

Your front door is one of your home’s biggest focal points, so you need it to look smart and elegant in order for it to impress people.

The overall appearance of the building can also be heavily dependent on the look of the door and how secure, or otherwise, it is.

At the very first sign of your door being past its best in terms of aesthetics or security, get a replacement door bought, which could be a UPVC or composite door.

UPVC doors have been a big seller since the mid 80’s and you’ll know what they are, but you may not know composite doors quite so well.

What are composite doors?

A door that’s ‘composite’ is one that has been constructed from a series of different materials, typically UPVC, foam, wood, and a GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic) skin.

Composite doors could easily be confused for timber doors as they have a natural-looking wood grain, but they outperform traditional wooden doors by a significant margin for watertightness, robustness, and solidity.

A composite door’s strength is so impressive and we’re pleased to have some of the strongest and most thermally efficient composite doors at Mid Wales Windows.

The different components of a composite door

How are composite and UPVC doors different?

We’ve already mentioned that a composite door is made up of multiple materials, meshed together, but a UPVC door is fabricated purely from plastic, so that’s why composite doors are thicker(around 44mm in depth).

They cost a bit more than UPVC doors due to the disparity of materials in their designs, but that doesn’t make a composite door vastly superior, as a UPVC door provides a very high standard of thermal efficiency and security.

What door maintenance do they both need?

Keeping a composite or UPVC door frame clean just involves wiping it with warm soapy water and a soft cloth – refrain from using abrasive materials or solvent cleaners to avoid damaging the finish.

Once a year, lubricate the hinges and locks, and if they need it, the handles and door hardware, to keep them working smoothly.

Debris needs to be kept out of the threshold and the door’s drainage holes to prevent a build-up of water in them – check this most often during any really wet spells of weather.
