What size is a standard external front door?
It surprises some customers to discover that a single standard door size in the UK doesn’t exist, due to homeowners and door manufacturers using a mix of sizes.
At the time of writing, 2’6” (30 inches or 762mm) registers as the most common door width in England and Wales. That’s not the case in Scotland though – their doors are generally narrower and measure about 28.5 inches (726mm).
Something else to be alert to is that the definition of what is a ‘standard’ door varies between installers, determined by product ranges and fitting procedures. Mid Wales’ crafts everything bespoke, so we’ll incur no difficulty seeing to non-standard openings.
Typical Standard Internal Door Sizes At UK Homes
It still remains that standard internal door sizes in the UK are measured using metric and imperial naming systems. For clarity, any door deemed as “2 ft 6” in older buildings is 762 mm in metric terms.
Imperial sizes such as 2’3”, 2’6” and 2’9” are commonplace in England and Wales, but Scotland likes to use metric measurements, specifically for newer dwellings, where 2040 mm tall doors are habitually selected.
Common standard door sizes, with both width and height in metric and imperial units, are detailed in this table.

Standard External Front & Back Door Sizes
UK front and back door sizes are pretty consistent, which makes life easier. Most common external door dimensions start from around 1981 mm in height and have an average width of roughly 610 mm to 926 mm.
These sizes, more often than not, complement the majority of traditional door openings, facilitating a straightforward door replacement.
Although we don’t work at Scottish homes, it’s worth being aware of the 2040 mm tall series popularised north of the border, regularly employed where contemporary loftiness is sought. Our table offers a clear explanation of where each size is normally used.

Standard Door Sizes By Material
Door material can have a discernible influence on height and width and slab thickness.
The lion’s share of timber doors have a size of around 44 mm to 56 mm, with composite doors measuring at about 44 mm to 70 mm. UPVC door slabs are not as thick.
They each look quite different, but also offer varied standards of insulation and security. Discover the contrasts in this handy table, giving a simple breakdown of common door sizes and materials.

While it’s definitely good for you to know about door sizes, it will be Mid Wales that handles any measuring up if you order a replacement door from our range. Explore the door collection we have here.
