A little bit of interesting facts on Powys

Northern Powys, which spans the heart of mid-Wales, encompasses a landscape which is wild and remote, and has some of the country's most magnificent scenery and wildlife.

To the east, near Offa's Dyke Path, is the attractive county town of Montgomery, which has many well-preserved Georgian buildings and is overlooked by the ancient ruins of its castle. The charming town of Llanidloes lies further south, while in the valley of the River Severn to the north is the market town of Welshpool, home to the spectacular 13th century Powis Castle, and the Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway.

The market town of Machynlleth lies in the Dyfi Valley near the Cambrian Mountains to the east, and the town's proximity to Cadair Idris in Snowdonia makes it a good base for walking. In the surrounding hills nearby is the Centre for Alternative Technology, Europe's leading eco-centre. Lake Vyrnwy, built in the late 19th century to supply water to Liverpool, lies in the foothills of the Berwyn Mountains. The lake is famous for its 19th century dam, and there are many walks and trails around the forested shores and in the Berwyn Mountains themselves. In the far north of Powys is Pistyll Rhaeadr, the highest waterfall in Wales and England at 240ft, and one of the alleged seven wonders of Wales.
